EDWARD BURTYNSKY: THE GREAT ACCELERATION

INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY, 2025

For EDWARD BURTYNSKY: THE GREAT ACCELERATION, great care was put into lighting these large works. I worked with lighting designers for both ICP to engineer a creative solution using both existing light fixtures and cost-effective 30x60 degree filters retrofitted into spotlights. Working together with Duncan Macmillan from the Burtynsky team CAD drawings visualized the spread of light across each work according to ICP’s track locations and placement of artworks.

Known for his large-scale works, this image of a crop field is the larges photograph Burtynsky has made to date. Coordination with the Burtynsky team remotely brought this 28 x 28 foot vinyl to life with 10 panels in one day.

The design of the exhibition required the construction of two temporary walls in ICP’s third floor media galleries. Using inexpensive metal studs anchored into existing museum walls and sand bags as balast, two new “wing” walls were constructed and finished over the course of two days.
